So I have to admit that while I am a fair-weathered friend of Earl Grey proper, I do love Creme of Earl Grey. One thing about Earl Greys in general is that they are not all created equal. The biggest issue with Earl Grey is that the quality of the ingredients seems to make a huge difference in the overall cup, and I would say that this is even more so in Earl Grey than in many other flavored blends. This pertains not only to the tea base, but to the oils and other flavors used as well. Then there is the mixture of the ingredients. Some like a strong bergamot, while others do not. Earl Grey Creme is also subject to such issues, but also has the added component of vanilla. Vanilla can be a rather fickle flavor and a poor quality vanilla can make or break a blend.
I must say that my sample of this smells yumdiddlyscrumptious! I have been forcing myself to put off reviewing this one for a few days because I wasn't feeling well, but have found myself repeatedly salivating over it. Fortunately, I am feeling much better today and I am happy to finally indulge myself with a cup of this. I prepared this according to the instructions on California Tea House's website and infused the leaves in boiling water for 3 min. Happily, the aroma found in my sample translates into the cup! This is delicious. Period. The black tea base is decent enough. It pairs nicely with the flavor profile and nothing about it detracts from the cup. It is mild yet slightly bitter and a bit zippy. However, that combo works well with the vanilla creme and bergamot. The thing that makes this Vanilla Creme Earl Grey special is that the finish of the cup is almost that of a creamy lemon chiffon with a bit of pizazz. That lemon creme flavor lingers in your mouth long after each swallow. The bergamot used in this seems to be of a great quality and does leave you with a bit of the tingle in my mouth that I associate with drinking Earl Grey. The vanilla is very creamy and delicious and does not taste fake or bitter.
I highly recommend this Vanilla Creme Earl Grey. As far as Earl Grey Creme blends go, I think this is perfection. The zip of the black tea, the lingering lemon creme flavor and the perfect touch of bergamot just did it for me. I LOVE this! Further, California Tea House is currently offering free shipping on orders of any size. Since this is just $9 for a 4 oz stash, I am off to place my order. Yes, I enjoyed it THAT much. YUM!
