purity.jpg"A detoxifying blend of premium Ceylon black tea with peppermint leaves and ginger root." ---Tavalon website.

Whenever I get a mint tea amongst my samples, I save it for when I need it following something spicy or otherwise objectionable at dinner. Tonight the culprit was Tabbouleh (not sure if I spelled that right), which is an Arabic dish made with parsley, tomatoes, Bulgar wheat, lemon juice and onions. I have never made it so there actually might be some other ingredients in there that I missed. Tonight's Tabbouleh had some particularly strong onions in it and I am hopeful a little mint will ensure that everyone will not know that my breath doesn't offend anyone despite that it is only myself and my 3.5 yr old at home tonight.

Tavalon is a company that periodically sends samples to Teaviews for review, which is how I first became familiar with them. My sample of Purity contains all of the ingredients promised by Tavalon, but there appears to be much less ginger root than peppermint. I prepared this using Tavalon's suggested brewing parameters and used water that had been brought to a full boil and infused for 5 minutes. The resulting cup is actually quite nicely done. The flavor profile is dominated by the peppermint, which tastes to be of good quality. The nice thing is that it does not completely overwhelm the Ceylon, which also tastes to be of good quality. The ginger is pretty much lost on tongue, but toward the end of my cup, I could sense a little bit of the heat that I associate with drinking ginger built up in my mouth. Toward the end of my cup, I decided to add a splash of soy. This does indeed take dairy well and anyone that finds the mint to be a bit strong might add a little dairy as it seems to take it down a notch.

There was something about this blend that begged me to prepare a sample of this iced. This blend is VERY refreshing iced. Both the mint and the Ceylon are strong enough to stand up an ice cube. Tavalon suggest this blend as a potential hangover cure, which makes sense as both ginger and peppermint are natural ingredients known for helping upset tummies. Further, a little caffeine is always welcome when nursing a hangover, and if I were drinking this with that in mind, then I would totally drink this iced and with a bit of sweetener. Oddly, I could actually taste the ginger a bit more in the iced preparation.

Overall, I really like this blend. It is nicely done and seems to be made with quality ingredients. If I were to tweak anything though, then I would add a bit more ginger to the blend. After trying this blend out made several different ways, I actually found that I preferred this blend prepared iced and ended up making the rest of my sample that way. Overall, this is a great mint black tea blend that is excellent iced. Thumbs up!
