There are times when I feel as though black tea really gets shortchanged. All you have to do is compare the leaves of a black tea to say an oolong. They are so tiny in comparison. So I was pleasantly surprised when I looked at my sample of JafTea Golden Ceylon. The leaves are huge for a black tea and well black with hints of gold on the leaves. And that’s not all this tea has going for it. The aroma of the dry tea is enticing with that…well for lack of a better descriptor…tea scent with overtones of a clover honey. I could hardly wait to try my sample.I brewed up my sample using a teaspoon with 10 ounces of boiling water. I let it steep for 3 minutes to a rich golden brown. The aroma when steeped now has the scent of caramelized sugar. The taste is also naturally sweet so be wary when adding sweetener. This is one smooth tea. There is no astringency that I could find. While not the highest grade Ceylon, it brews up to be a delightful cup of tea.
I did manage to save some of my first cup to ice and I have to say that I enjoyed the iced version just as much as the hot. My second steep was slightly weaker but still a good cup of tea. This would be a great tea to drink when one just wants a cup of tea and doesn’t have the time or inclination to make a production of it. I plan on picking up some for myself for iced tea which I tend to drink year around.
Oh and the wet leaves are just a large as some of the oolongs I have had.
