drinkleafbloodorangeblack"This black tea is blended with the natural essence of blood oranges. A great match- citrusy, orange fragrance mingled with robust black tea. The dried leaves interspersed with bright orange flecks are attractive. The dark amber color of this tea is inviting. Clean, citrus notes on the palate and an impressive finish." ---Drink the Leaf website.

Blood orange is one of these flavor profiles that I can go either way with. If you have never tried it before, it is kind of like someone made a pulp-free orange juice from a concentrate and didn't add enough water so the orange juice is pretty intense. Blood orange is not a sweet flavor, but more of a penetrating, rich citrus flavor. It is much more unsweetened orange juice than orange Kool-Aid. My sample package smells pretty much like I expected---like someone soaked my tea leaves in orange juice. It also contains a number of thin flower shreds, which I would guess to be safflowers? They provide a nice pop of color against the dark black leaves of the Sri Lankan black tea.

At the advice of the Drink the Leaf website, which is worth checking out btw, I prepared this with water cut just short of boiling and infused for close to 4 min. Based on the aroma and my previous experience with some blood orange blends, I kinda braced myself when it came time to take a sip. However, instead of being greeted by a super intense blood orange that is tart and in-your-face, I found a rather delicious blood orange profile. It does taste like blood orange, but it is a very well done blood orange. It is not over-the-top and too intense though. It tastes like someone spiked my black tea with a splash of orange juice. Oh, and speaking of black tea, you can actually taste the black tea. Don't get me wrong, this has a fairly full flavor profile, but the black tea is rich and full-bodied itself. It is a bit brisk and holds it own. I could primarily taste it on the finish. I also suspect that this might make a fine iced tea.

Overall, if you like blood oranges or are just looking for a great adult breakfast tea, then you can't go wrong with this. I have tried several blood orange teas prior to this, and none of them come close to being as good as this one. It has a rich, deep citrus flavor and is delicious. I found this blend to taste invigorating and I find myself wanting another cup already, suggesting that this is one better made by the pot than the cup. Thumbs up!

This tea, and this tea alone, has pulled me away from my coffee habit. Enough said.
