Sophie’s Teaview Snapshot
"An expertly blended black tea with a smooth apricot taste. Truly delicious!"
|
I was excited to be tasting this tea, given the enthusiastic responses from other Teaviews' reviewers. Combining a mix of black tea, apricot and saffron, I was at once impressed by the deliciously fruity smell coming from the sample. The tea smelled not of dried apricots but of fresh ones, without being cloying or artificial seeming. I am a sucker for pretty smelling teas. I would have bought this tea based on smell alone. It is also a very attractive looking tea. Long charcoal-coloured leaves are interspersed with the fiery red strands of saffron. I followed the recommended instructions and mix one teaspoon of tea for an 8 ounce cup and let steep for 4 minutes. The tea is not nearly as fragrant as the dried leaves had me hope for but there is still a pleasant whiff of apricot to it. It brews to a dark coppery colour. At the forefront, the taste of the black tea is bold and full flavoured. There is a hint of bitterness from the black tea, but it works well in this case. The saffron may be contributing to this impression by adding it's characteristically smoky and slightly bitter taste. It's a pleasant counter point to the lightness of the apricot flavour. The fruity taste lingers lightly on on the tongue. There is a nice body to the tea. I'm reminded of honey coating the mouth. I can imagine that this tea would make a nice iced tea as well.
I normally don't steep fruit teas twice, as I find all the fruit flavour is completely spent in one infusion, but I am curious as to how well this tea will hold up to a second 4 minute steep. I am very pleasantly surprised! The apricot comes more into its own the second time around. There are more astringent notes to the blend, making it paradoxically smoother and more citrus-like. There is a delicious freshness to the taste that was not there the first time around. The colour is lighter but the brew has just as much body to it. The taste of the black tea is less present but not to the detriment of the tea.
I have to agree with my fellow reviewers, this is an expertly blended tea. It seems like great value to me to get such great taste out of two infusions. I am a bit disappointed that the fruit taste doesn't come out more strongly the first time around but overall this is a very warming blend, great for the grey days of winter.
