I have had numerous samples of chocolate-flavored chai, but Culinary Tea is the first to expose me to a white chocolate chai. The chai base gets its spicy flavors from the addition of ginger, cardamom, coriander, cinnamon, cloves and black pepper. I was pleased to see that black pepper was included, as I’ve found that chai blends that incorporate black pepper always have a little extra zing. The spices were balanced beautifully in that they worked together to create a rich and tasty tea, but no one ingredient overpowered the others. The white chocolate flavor was surprisingly noticeable in the aroma of the brewed tea, giving off a sweet and almost caramel-like aroma. The tea’s overall flavor was spicy and sweet. I found that the white chocolate flavor came across at the beginning of the sip, then the traditional chai spices lingered in my mouth. I added a splash of milk and sugar; this made a satisfying cup that could easily substitute for a high-calorie dessert. My main concern with this tea is that the black tea used as the base doesn’t appear to be of the highest quality, so careful attention needs to be paid to the infusion time to prevent an over-steeped and bitter brew.
