I am an Earl Grey fanatic. I go out of my way to sample not only traditional Earl Grey teas but also any other tea blend flavoured with bergamot. So I was pretty excited to sample something called “Earl Grey Supreme”, especially once I found out that it had won two gold stars at the 2009 Great Taste Awards.Upon looking over my sample, the dry leaves were of average size and a fairly consistent dark mahogany colour. They were predictably interspersed with a small sprinkling of bergamot flower petals: no big surprise there. The sample had an intriguing odour however. Rather than the usual, rather astringent bergamot bouquet, there was a delicately sweet smell, reminiscent cream and sugar, slightly floral and citrus-like all at once. I was getting pretty excited to taste this baby!
I boiled 8 ounces of water for one teaspoon of leaves and let steep for 4 minutes as I like my teas fairly strong. The result is a dark coppery brew, with the faintest odour of bergamot. In the end, the taste is rather disappointing. I didn't bother using the leaves for a second steep, as the first one was so lacking in flavour. The bergamot taste one would expect is sadly subtle and retiring. It is not a bad tea, but not one I would drink if I was in the mood for a really good Earl Grey (or any Earl Grey for that matter). It's more akin to a strong black tea, like an English Breakfast. The leaves have a robust flavour with some smoky undertones to them. The creaminess I detected smelling the dried leaves is also present in the taste, adding some sweetness to the blend. It strikes me that this is an Earl Grey for people who don't usually like Earl Greys or like their Earl Greys very subtle. Alas my search for the perfect cup of Earl Grey continues!
