"Our Kabuki green tea is as dramatic and colorful as its namesake. Large sencha leaves, blossomy cherry tree flowers and vibrant violet blooms come together for a bold, flowery bouquet with a scent of cherry simple syrup. The brew is bright, clear, electric lime. It has a flowery aroma with a light, vegetal undertone. The flavor is smooth and sweet – the taste of cherry blossoms is heightened with flavors of violet and fresh-cut flower stems." ---American Tea Room.American Tea Room has liberated me when it comes to Sencha. After trying their Immortal Green, which contains a Sencha tea base, and LOVING it, I now feel liberated when it comes to drinking blends that contain Sencha (at least Sencha from American Tea Room). Dang, that was some good Sencha.
When I tore open my sample package, I was immediately struck my a vibrant aroma of cherry blossoms that is not unlike a cherry simple syrup (when inhaled next to a cherry blossom tree). The blend is visually stunning with pops of pink flowers and purple violets. It also appears to be quite fresh, which gives it major brownie points with me. I prepared this with water cut just short of steaming and infused for 2 min. The resulting cup is pretty good. While I can't detect the same creamy, buttery flavor that I found in Immortal Green, the Sencha is mild and a pleasant tea base. It appears to be of a good quality and is smooth, a tad vegetal and a little sweet. The flavor profile is full and tastes of cherry blossoms primarily. This is very floral tea, but not rose flavored. Many Japanese cherry teas taste like roses and this does not. Since I am not a fan of rose per se, I actually prefer this floral menagerie. I will warn that the flavor profile is strong and commands your attention.
Overall, I cannot call this my favorite offering from American Tea Room, but that is probably just due to personal taste preferences. I love cherry as a flavor, but I would really prefer it without all the floral. That said, I would take a cup of this cherry blossom tea over a cherry rose flavored tea any day. Of all the Japanese cherry blossom/rose teas that I have tried, this one is definitely the most well done. I think that the flavor profile itself is just not meant to be one that I call a personal favorite. If you like an overtly floral tea paired with a quality tea base, then I would recommend this to you.
