Boston Tea Company advertises this tea as a blend of the sweet and the tart, cherry, cranberry and raspberry flavours mixing with the delicate taste of white tea. I love fruity teas, especially ones with new twists to them. Although there are a number of cherry teas on the market, the addition of cranberries and raspberries has me quite intrigued.Looking at the sample, the tea has a number of ingredients in it besides the tea leaves: dried raspberries, flower petals, other types of leaves, some type of twig... I wish I could tell you exactly what they are but beyond the above description, there is very little information about this tea on the website. I'm a little concerned right off the bat as there seems to be a disproportionate amount of these ingredients compared to the number of tea leaves. There is a gently floral cherry smell coming from the mixture. Although not very strong, it smells natural rather than an artificially induced bouquet.
I steep one heaping teaspoon of tea for 4 minutes in water that has been cooling for 30 seconds. The results are rather disappointing. The fruity sweet-tart taste promised is absent. Rather I'm left with a pale green grass flavoured liquid. The dominant taste is that of raspberry leaves, the flavour of the white tea being very subtle. Although I don't have the most delicate of palates, this seems just bland rather than delicate to me. As the tea cools an unpleasant sour aftertaste develops that is not checked with any fruity sweetness.
Sometimes fruity teas need a bit of a longer infusion for the taste to fully emerge from the dried fruit bits, so I decide to give the leaves a second chance, this time steeping for 8 minutes. The taste is a bit more encouraging this time. The white tea comes more into it's own the second time around. There is a gentle cherry sweetness all the way through, rounded off by a far more pleasant, toned-down tartness. Again this seems to become more pronounced as the tea cools. However the grassy taste of raspberry leaves is still too strong and the other flavours too subtle to make it truly worthwhile.
It's difficult to recommend this tea as the first infusion was so lack luster. The second steep had a bit more potential but still left me wanting. This could be a fabulous tea in theory, but it needs some serious tweaking in order to make it work.
