Lemon and black tea is a classic pairing, yet it seems that too many attempts at this combination go dreadfully wrong, thanks to the use of artificial ingredients and/or a lemon component that is too sour. Samovar's Lemon Yunnan Black tea is a great offering in that it doesn't have any artificial flavor, and nor is the lemon flavor too sour. This tea is a simple blend of Yunnan black tea and lemongrass. I was a bit confused why Samovar's description of this tea mentions lemongrass, lemon zest and lemon balm, when only lemongrass is actually used, but I tried not to dwell on that topic for too long. The dried blend smells crisp and clean, with the lemon leading the way. The aroma actually smells a little tart, but this tart aroma doesn't translate to a tart or sour flavor. The brewed tea is tasty in a lip-smacking sort of way. It is an interesting tea in that the crisp and refreshing quality of the lemongrass starts the sip, but the Yunnan base, with its thick and heavy mouthfeel finishes it off. I found this to be a refreshing (no pun intended) change from flavored black teas where a sub-par black tea base is used and essentially contributes very little to the final flavor of the tea. Taken as an iced tea, the Yunnan's contribution becomes even more evident. I didn't add milk or sugar to my tea, but I suppose that a little sugar would suit this tea nicely. This is a tea I look forward to drinking again, and one that I would certainly recommend. I think anyone who appreciates a clean lemon flavor will like this, and Yunnan lovers will also appreciate a well-done flavored Yunnan tea.
