Organic Breakfast is a blend of southern Indian tea leaves and happens to have been awarded the title of “Best Plain Black Tea” by Cooks Illustrated magazine. The appearance of this tea is nothing extraordinary, and in fact, the tea’s small leaf size (mostly broken bits) had me a bit skeptical. Mighty Leaf’s website suggests a 3 to 5 minute infusion time, but given the small leaf size, I opted for a more conservative 2-minute soak. The resulting tea is certainly rich and hearty, and delivers just what one expects from a “breakfast” tea. The flavor is primarily malty with hints of fruity and cocoa sweetness. I noticed just a bit of a bite to this tea, in that it was enough to give the tea some substance, but didn’t cross the line into making the tea bitter or unenjoyable. What I appreciated about this tea was that it was hearty, but not heavy or flat. Unlike many breakfast blends, this tea was great as a stand-alone brew, not needing any milk or sugar. I did try some sugar on my second cup, however, and it took the sugar quite nicely. On the whole, this tea isn’t anything that will change your outlook on tea or on life, but it does deliver as a breakfast tea. The tea is very reasonably priced, making it an ideal selection to buy in a sizeable quantity and keep on hand for the daily morning brew.
