I have had some exceptional Darjeelings this year, but I was dismayed when I realised I haven't had a 2010 Puttabong. It's definitely one of my favourite Darjeeling estates, but until now, I haven't managed to sample the current year. This review almost feels like cheating because, unless Mark T. Wendell did something very wrong in the acquiring or storing of this tea or they're downright lying about what it is, I'm basically guaranteed to enjoy it. I doubt the folks there are either idiots or swindlers, so this one's basically already in the bag.

One tablespoon per six ounces, 180°, 4 minutes. The prepared tea smells bright and amazing and, predictably, of muscatel. The flavour is the classic Puttabong profile: Rich and strongly muscatel. It is fruity with slight popcorn notes, and it goes down the gullet as smoothly as any Darjeeling. It has a great deal of depth of flavour, scent, and even aftertaste.

As was probably safe to assume, this tea does not disappoint. It has all the classic markers of a quality Darjeeling and all the flavours of a Puttabong. The leaf was clearly stored and treated well on the part of Mark T. Wendell. I have little experience with the company, but especially after this experience, I am liking the cut of their jib.

Visit Mark T. Wendell Teas for more information on this tea and many more from their extensive product catalogue.
