BourgeaTEA’s Irish Breakfast is a combination of Assam and Ceylon tea. The leaves were small, black, and wiry with a few golden tips sprinkled in. The scent was slightly malty, with faint citrus notes. Brewing recommendations were not found on the website, so I used my standard slightly heaped teaspoon in boiling water with a three-minute steep. The resulting amber liquid carried a much heavier malty scent than the dry leaves.
I tried my first few sips without any additions and I was surprised by the strength of this blend. The tea was very robust, but kept in check nicely with a hefty amount of malt and a very light zing of citrus. Even with these bold flavors, the tea did not come close to being overpowering or too astringent. I was quite happy with the balance. For my second cup, I decided to add a little cream. Happily, the tea handled the addition in stride and the cup was just as enjoyable as before. I really liked this Irish Breakfast blend and would recommend it to any fan of breakfast tea. It was a wonderful way to start my morning.
