Thurbo Tea First Flush 2010 is my first exposure to Golden Tips Tea of Darjeeling, a company that offers an impressive array of Indian teas. My sample contained a generous amount of elaves securely packaged in a foil-lined pouch. I always appreciate when a company goes the extra mile to ensure that their product are properly packaged so as to maintain freshness and preserve flavor. The dry leaves had a typical Darjeeling spring freshness about them, but they also carried a soft, smoky note. I let water freshly boiled water sit aside for a minute or two before pouring the water over the leaves and infusing for three minutes. A coppery-tan liquid that was semi-opaque resulted.
The tea has a distinct astringecny, which is rather typical for first flush Darjeelings. The astringency is not overwhelming or altogether unpleasant, but it is readily observable. Besides the astringency, the tea is characterized as brisk, clean, and earthy with just a hint of a lemon/fruit flavor. As most Darjeelings will give a good second infusion, I steeped the leaves for a second time with the results being a cup that was similar in flavor other than that the astringency was much reduced in the second infusion.
In all, this is a pretty decent Darjeeling that comes off as clean and green. I wouldn't say this was my favorite First Flush Darjeeling, but it makes a strong cup and is worth trying.
