This marks my first sample from Silk Road Teas, an online tea retailer sourcing artisan and rare teas from China.  It’s always interesting to peruse new retailer websites to learn about the companies and the teas they offer.  Silk Road Teas has a very informative site that is easy to navigate with descriptions that are available for each tea as well as recommendations for brewing.  This is always appreciated, especially when dealing with a new tea.

Heavenly Blue Peak is a high mountain varietal grown in the Zhejiang Province.  The dry leaves in my sample were beautiful shades of green, similar to silver needle in size, and appeared to be more flattened and folded rather than twisted.  The scent was slightly vegetal and carried a hint of apricot.  Following the recommendations from the website, I used one heaping teaspoon in 185-degree water with a one and a half minute steep.  The color was a pale gold and the scent was very light with a hint of sweet grass.  Flavors in the first cup were delicate and included a slight vegetal quality with sweet underlying notes.  I wouldn’t classify this tea as either fruity or floral, as the sweetness was more akin to a very light honey essence.

For my second cup, I reused the leaves and steeped them for two minutes, again with 185-degree water.  While the color of the cup remained the same, the flavor was a little bit lighter.  This was also a nice drinking cup, but because the flavors presented in the first cup were already delicate, the second seemed a bit too light.  This tea would be a good candidate for multiple short steepings as opposed to starting with a one or two minute steep.  Overall, this tea presented a very delicious and easy drinking cup.  For those interested in delicate greens with just a hint of vegetal qualities, this would be an excellent tea to try.
