It's immediately apparent that the small balls that make up these leaves were processed using the CTC (Cut Tear Curl) method, commonly used for teas put in bags because it means the leaves release flavour faster. So I venture to the Culinary Teas website and see that this is indeed made up of Kenyan BP1 (Broken Pekoe Grade 1) and second flush Assam BOP (Broken Orange Pekoe) CTC leaves. They recommend steeping 3-7 minutes, which strikes me as a bit odd since, as I just said, CTC leaves release their flavour really quickly. Clearly this is designed to be a milk and sugar tea, but since I'm trying to cut down on my sugar consumption and aside from chai, I don't like milk in my tea, I'll be drinking it straight.

Which means I steep it at 212° for only three minutes. If you're planning on drinking this straight, I wouldn't brave much longer than that because at this point, it's already quite bracing. It's not overly harsh, but it would take well to milk and sweetener to mellow out the astringency.

It's a solid CTC tea and a pretty good Irish Breakfast blend. It's got a nice citrusy tartness and a subtle maltiness. I enjoy the fruitiness and the lingering bitter finish. The heavy body and rich flavour make for a nice wake-up blend. It's not the best CTC or breakfast tea I've had, but it's overall a good tea for a great price. It'd buy it as an early-morning tea or for days I don't want to think about what I'm making.
