Vanessa’s Teaview Snapshot

Karma Blend's Authentic Chai earns it's authentic moniker, as this recipe comes from Karma Blend's Indian COO's great-grandmother. The usual suspects (black tea from Assam, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and cloevs) are all involved, yet there are also a couple of less-common ingredients listed here too, namely star anise and mint. I was a little disappointed that I could not see any actual star anise pods or pieces in my blend, as compared to the pretty picture on the Karma Blends website. However, in general, the blend contains an impressive array of decent-sized spices and leaves. I could not find preparation instructions on the website or on my sample packet, so I went with a three minute infusion in boiling water. I also added milk and sugar, as recommended on the Karma Blends website. My first impression of this tea is that I found the flavor to be very mild and not all that spicy. I have had other chai blends that just hit you like a ton of bricks with a strong spicy flavor. This blend, on the contrary, is happy to settle into the sweeter side of things. Yes, the spices are present, and I would say that the cloves, ginger and cinnamon are among the most noticeable, but they are all happy to be mellowed out and diluted by the presence of milk and sugar. Sadly, I could not pick up on any anise contribution, and that was what I was seeking most from this blend. The mint was a nice addition that was happy to sit quietly in the background but added just a bit of uniqueness to the blend. My overall impression of this tea was positive, but I can't say that I think this is the best chai I have ever had. On the spice strength scale, this blend falls just a little short of my desired spiciness level, but this could certainly be ideal for those that don't necessarily love pungent spicy teas. I guess that I wouldn't suggest you visit Karma Blends just to buy this blend, but if you already happen to be filling a shopping cart on their online store, this could be one worth tossing in too.
