Ah, Florence. Sitting in a quaint café sipping a cup of rich chocolate and hazelnut flavored black tea with the midmorning sun kissing my face. The hustle and bustle of Plazza del Duomo reflected in my ridiculously large sunglasses. What’s that sound? There’s humming sound barley detectable over the melodic ring of church bells. Is that a Vespa? Of course it’s a Vespa whisking two young lovers off for tryst. I take another sip of tea… ah, Florence.

Okay, I’ve never actually been to Florence Italy but never underestimate the ability of a good tea to transport you to another time and place. Harney and Sons have successfully achieved that magic with their delicious chocolate and hazelnut flavored black tea named after one of Italy’s most exquisite cities, Florence. Harney and Sons is a very well respected London based teahouse that produces some of the finest black teas I’ve ever tasted. I have very high standards for Harney and Sons teas, and Florence exceeds all of my expectations.

The aroma of the dry tea is like that of decadent dark chocolate liquor. I brewed this beauty in my Breville tea maker at 212 degrees for 4 minutes. The brewed tea has a wonderful chocolate bouquet with gorgeous dark amber infusion. At first sip, the promise of a chocolaty treat is delivered. The chocolate flavor quickly moves to a biscuity, smooth, black tea body with a subtle astringency. A rich, creamy, hazelnut tone quickly follows, and the finish is all rich chocolaty goodness.

Harney and Sons teas are very reasonably priced for their exceedingly high quality. At $7.50 for a 4-ounce tin, you can have the Florence experience for a lot less than the cost of international airfare. This tea will find a permanent place of reverence in my tea collection. I’ll be buying Florence in the bulk bag going forward. Ah, Florence...
