The dry leaves of this offering are dark and crisp, with shades of brown and black dominating, with only an occasional speck of tan or silver. The aroma of the dry leaves is heavy on a toasted element, but I think I detect a subtle underlying muscatel note. I brewed my sample of this tea using one teaspoon of leaves for an eight-ounce cup, and I steeped the ealves for three minutes in boiling water. I found the flavor to be strong and heavy, but not as complex or full as I was hoping. The flavor comes off a bit flat and lacking any briskness. I wouldn't say the flavor is necessarily bad, but compared to other Darjeelings, it is very one-dimensional, consisting of a toasty, almost burnt, caramel flavor. The different nuances that tend to pop up in many Darjeelings are conspicuously absent here. This particular offering seems less like a Darjeeling and more like a heartier breakfast tea to which one would add milk and/or sugar. It certainly works well as a morning brew, as the flavor is robust and does have a hearty feel to it.
Honestly, this isn't a bad tea, it just gave me an experience that was entirely different from what I was expecting. It is tasty in its own right, but I would caution that you would have to be a fan of roasted and toasty flavors to fully appreciate this one. The Golden Tips website got this right on when they described this tea as "high fired tea with pungency".
