Golden Tips has an impressive selection of Darjeeling teas, and a few of them are "value packs", consisting of less fancy packaging, and some blends from top quality estates, but perhaps one slight notch down from the finest hand-selected leaves. At least that's the impression I get. The generically labeled "Second Pick" Darjeeling is a blend of quality Summer Flush teas from various estates throughout the Darjeeling region. Presumably the "delicate" nomenclature comes into play in reference to the flavor of this tea - although 2nd Flush teas are typically bolder than first flush, I find the flavor of this blend to be more subtle and indeed delicate.

The dried leaves have an apparent blend-like quality to them - a range of wiry to flat leaves, small to large in size, and a veritable cornucopia of colors ranging from deep to light brown, tan to off-white, and some light greens as well. The aroma is woody, also subtle.

A 4 minute infusion produces a light reddish golden cup with a mellow aroma. The flavor is mild, almost too-much-so. There is a range of flavors happening, albeit meekly, with not enough focus on any one definitive property. Not a very dry cup, and flavors tend to pop up and disappear rapidly. The finish can be long in one sip, but in others it seems to dissipate more quickly. This is somewhat of a strange brew. It's not unpleasant, and can be intriguing, but unfortunately the surprises and properties of this tea are outweighed by the fact that the resultant flavors are rather mediocre.
