Mellow Monk is a tea company that has chosen to focus specifically on bringing the finest and best tasting Japanese green teas to market. I admire the good work that Mellow Monk strives to do in the tea community as outlined in their mission statement; “Our mission is to provide small-scale, independent, family-owned and -operated growers in Japan with the means to supply their tea to green tea aficionados outside of their traditional geographic base. In other words, with Mellow Monk functioning like a virtual co-op, the sky's the limit for our growers.” Tea companies that work directly with independent farmers to bring a sustainable product to market make my heart swell with joy. The name Blissful Buds has taken on a whole new meaning for me.
The leaves are a rich, dark green color with a few light green flecks. The young, tender sencha buds used to make Blissful buds are chopped into such tiny pieces that the leaves almost resemble coffee grounds. This type of tea is called mecha and despite the heavy-handed processing of the buds, there’s no dust to be found in this tea. The infusion is a bright, light green and there are a few tiny leaves that escaped the infuser in the bottom of the cup. The aroma of the liquor is subtly vegetal and my first sip is very true to the aroma. I detect very little astringency and although Blissful Buds is a flavorful tea, the body is soft and the dominant flavor is very much like that of steamed spinach. There’s a definite sweetness to this tea that comes in at the very end, but I don’t quite taste the berry or apple notes mentioned in the description on the Mellow Monk website. This is a very enjoyable cup of green tea.
I brewed Blissful Buds at 170 degrees for two minutes. I enjoyed my cup tea without any additives and it was perfect that way. My headache is all but gone now, and I can’t help but think that a fine cup of green tea might have something to do with my quick recovery. I highly recommend this tea.
