Containing organic and fair trade rooibos and bergamot essential oil, this caffeine-free take on the classic blend comes close to the original in both taste and feel. Visually speaking my sample consists of average-looking rooibos needles. Taking a sniff, the bergamot perfume is sweet and not overly pungent.

Following the longer side of the instructions provided, I steeped a heaping teaspoonful of leaves in 8 ounces of freshly boiled water for 5 minutes. The resulting rusty red cup is mildly scented with a sweet citrus aroma. The bergamot lends a little more stoutness and astringency to the the rooibos, making the results closer in feel to a black tea. Although the nutty sweetness of the needles is clearly distinguishable, it's the citrus flavour that is front and centre. While not in the sinus-clearing category, the bergamot's contribution is really “in your face”. Personally I quite like that in an Earl Grey. The long-lasting grapefruit-like astringency of the finish is particularly pleasant here. However, if you prefer a more subtle presence, you may want to look elsewhere. Adding a little milk and sugar is possible although I would use a light touch with the dairy. While sturdier than most rooibos blends, it is still thinner in body than a black tea.

I tried steeping this tisane again. After 7 minutes the brew still has lots of citrus flavour to it. The rooibos' contribution feels much more watery though. This infusion is much less satisfying as a result but it's definitely still drinkable.

This is one of the more successful takes on a caffeine-free Earl Grey I've had. The bergamot oil used is strong but not overpowering and the rooibos' delicate nutty flavour makes for a good sidekick. At the time of writing this blend is currently on sale. Even regularly price, it's quite reasonable, especially considering this tisane supports fair trade agricultural practices. Well done!
