This offering is part of a wide range of Turkish apple blends available from the folks at Fusion Tea Room. Containing apple pieces, vanilla bean pieces, hibiscus petals and vitamin C and flavouring, this herbal blend can be consumed hot or cold. Looking for all the world like potpourri, the large chunks of fruit and flower petals make for a lively-looking blend. I can't spot any vanilla bean pieces but I can certainly smell them. Their aroma is still relatively subdued, as I can detect the apple pieces' delicate fruit scent underneath.

Diverging slightly from the suggested brewing directions, I infused a heaping teaspoonful of the blend for 7 minutes in freshly boiled water. The pretty crimson liquor is scented with a mixture of vanilla and baked apple notes. This tisane provides a softly sweet apple flavour with a moderately tart finish. I'm not sure where it comes from but I also detect the taste of walnuts. Adding a bit of sweetener enhances the vanilla's flavour but its not really necessary to do so. The sweetness of the fruit taste is pretty obvious here. This blend is in the same vein as “zinger” type tisanes but features a much more restrained contribution from the hibiscus. Overall this is a fruity infusion that is well balanced – tart without being too acidic. I imagine that this profile would make it quite thirst-quenching iced. Don't bother trying to re-infuse this blend though. After a 10 minute-long second steep, the brew is barely more flavourful than hot water.

This very affordable blend will please fans of tart fruity tisanes. The apple and vanilla flavours blend nicely and make for a satisfying caffeine-free brew. While personally I find it a bit too tart to drink on a regular basis, it does provide an invigorating tang. I look forward to sampling other blends from the Fusion Tea Room's extensive catalogue.
