Mate Dirty Dancing is, in itself, a bit of a bold step into new frontiers. For anyone who may not know, Mate is a traditional hot drink of South America (brewed from infusing dried leaves of the Yerba Mate plant) that is served in a gourd, sipped through a metal straw, and supposed to be shared. So to blend it with tropical ingredients, steep it in a food-grade plastic container, and ice it down, is probably an affront to the entire continent. But alas, it has been done before and will be done again. Forsman Tea has taken the base yerba mate and added mango, papaya, quitte fruit (quince) and flower petals (of unknown origin). Despite what sounds like a chunky blend, the components of this tea are surprisingly uniform – every morsal is pretty much the same exact tiny size and shape, barely distinguishable by the different hues of the ingredients. So it makes for a very cohesive blend.
When prepared hot, it is delicious. The tropical elements are there, as is the earthiness of the mate. Together, there is a slight astringency that follows the naturally-sweet and provocative taste. When iced, it is incredibly refreshing, and the tropical additives pretty much beg for it to be chilled. I can’t say either temperature made me want to throw on The Time of My Life and do my best Patrick Swayze, but it is rather delicious either hot or iced, and I urge folks to try the latter for a great alternative to the standard black-tea-based staple that we are all-too used to.
