This was the first 2012 Darjeeling I received and tried for this year. The package arrived in the April, just as the first flush was coming to a close. It’s amazing when you can tear open a new bag of tea, and it smells like a season. In this case, I tore the Sungma open and smelled spring. The aroma was fresh, slightly citrusy, wildernessy, and capped with spice and flowers. The visual bouquet also screamed, “Fresh!” Different hues of green dominated the palette.

I brewed 2 tsp. in 16oz. of water for two-and-a-half minutes. Pretty typical approach for a first flush. The lighter, the better – for the sake of nuance.

I first feared that my approach was a bit too light. The liquor brewed to a light, foggy green with a nice fruity aroma. There was also a tinge of smokiness on the scent, which I didn’t expect. On taste, it was wonderfully understated on the intro, but blossomed into a menagerie of spice, Pinot Gris and citrus blossoms on the top note. The aftertaste was gentle and only slightly dry. 2012 shaped up to be a superb year for Darjeeling.
