I have been on a bit of a Mellow Monk kick lately, happily ingesting any and all Mellow Monk products that come my way. Today I sampled their Yuzu Dream green tea. This is a blend of tamaryokucha leaves and yuzu peel (and in case you don't know, yuzu is a sour citrus fruit of Asian origin). I was very impressed with the volume of yuzu peel in the dry blend. The tea leaves are a dark green color and are somewhat smallish in size. The scent of the dry blend is intoxicating, offering a delightful blend of earthy greenness and orange. I actually find it very comparable to an orange Creamsicle. This is one of those teas that I keep sniffing just because it smells so good. I brewed this tea using sub-boiling water and a three minute infusion time. The tea is a yellowish straw color. While the citrus aroma was quite noticeable in the dry blend, the citrus flavor in the prepared tea is rather delicate. This is, first and foremost, a green tea. Still, the yuzu mingles nicely with the natural sweetness of the green tea leaves and the overall effect is an easy-sipping and moderately sweet cup. While I did enjoy this as a hot tea, I found it even more enjoyable as an iced tea. I was able to get an additional steeping out of the same leaves although the citrus flavor was very subtle. This is another winning offering from the folks at Mellow Monk. If you are looking for a naturally flavored green tea that delivers authentic but subtle flavor, I suggest you give this one a try.
