This 2012 First Flush harvest hails from the Rohini Estate in the Darjeeling tea region. The dry leaves are a combination of black and green shades, although I do note that there is more black in the mix than I would have expected for a first flush tea. The dry leaves are aromatic, with a pleasing combination of fruit and vegetal notes. I prepared this tea using just-boiling water and a three minute infusion. The tea is a dark shade of yellow and the liquid is fully transparent. The aroma coming off the brewed liquid is consistent with what I expect from a good Darjeeling. The flavor of this tea is on the complex side. The prominent flavor that I detected was a general sweet fruit flavor, but there is also a well-defined green flavor as well. Other flavors that seem to pop in and out throughout my sipping include muscatel, mineral, and even a hint of vanilla (quite unusual but very much appreciated!). This tea is rather astringent, although not so much so as to be unenjoyable.
I sampled this tea in the morning, but given its rather light body and the complex flavor profile, I think this tea is more fitting as an afternoon brew. I also tried a little of this tea as an iced tea and found that its unique flavor makes for a refreshing and atypical iced tea. This tea does seem to cost a bit more than other first flush Darjeelings, but it is an interesting offering with some unique characteristics that may justify the higher price.
