My sample today is from another vendor that is new to me, Capital Teas. They are not a new by any means however as this is a family own business that has been passed down through five generations. They do have retail locations where you can go in and hand select your teas in DC and in Maryland. For those of us not lucky enough to do so, they also have quite a nice website and a large variety of teas.My tea today is a Ceylon prepared in the CTC fashion. This tea has some history behind it as it is from the plantation that was managed by the great-great grandfather of the current owners of Capital Teas. The sample itself didn't have an aroma beyond one that is expected of black teas and that in itself is rather faint.
I brewed up the tea using 195 degree water and a steep time of 3 minutes as recommended on the website. The resulting liquor is a deep reddish brown and has a faint grassy aroma. It makes for a pleasant cup of tea but nothing really stands out. It is fairly mild with any dryness or astringency which would make it a great cup of tea for people just starting to explore the world of teas. It stands up fairly well to both sweetener and a dab of cream.
Personally this isn't a black tea that I would purchase for my own use as I prefer bolder black teas. The price is reasonable so it might be worth picking up for my husband's sweet teas.
