The Persimmon Tree Tea company is one that has really started to impress me. I have put in a couple of orders with this company, and I have not only been quite satisfied with their products, I have also found their customer service to be prompt and very effective. On my latest order, I was given a couple of samples to taste and review, including their Green Caramel, which is a blend of roasted and steamed green tea, rooibos, caramel, marigold petals, toasted rice, and natural flavors. I was really interested in trying this tea because while I love dessert-themed teas, I usually tend to think of caramel as a flavor reserved for black and rooibos teas. I've found that some flavors, such as caramel, aren't always successfully blended with green tea. However, the folks at Persimmon Tree Tea have successfully managed to blend these two seemingly disparate flavors of green tea and caramel into a truly tasty and satisfying brew. The dry tea has a wonderfully sweet aroma, with dominant caramel notes followed by more subtle leafy/green notes. The tea leaves are of appreciable size. Although rooibos is an ingredient in the tea, the green tea is by far the more abundant tea in the blend. I brewed the tea in 180-degree water for three minutes. The infusion was a light tannish-brown color which darkened as the tea cooled. The flavor of this tea is just what I was hoping for: the caramel is sweet but not cloying and is well-balanced by a toasty green tea. The green tea base is the perfect choice, since it brings to the blend a nutty and sweet flavor instead of a spinachy or overly grassy flavor. While caramel can seem like a heavy dessert flavor, this tea maintains a pleasantly light and rather gentle body. Another nice thing about this tea is that it is versatile because I found it equally enjoyable as a hot tea and an iced tea. I can't say I could taste the rooibos much, but I imagine it contributed by improving the tea's nuttiness and sweetness. Overall, I found this to be a delicious tea which surpassed my expectations of what a caramel flavored green tea could taste like. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a sweet (but not too sweet) green tea, to soemone who normally doesn't like green tea because of its vegetal flavor, or to anyone looking for an unusual green tea blend.
