whittardceylonkeilwirthGreat Britain has had the reputation of being a country of tea drinkers for the longest time. Just think back to the East India Tea Company or even the Boston Tea Party. They weren't known however for being drinkers of fine teas so I just love it when I run across a British tea vendor who goes against the sterotype. Whittard is just such a vendor.

Established back in 1886, they carry over 130 different tea blends along with coffee and chocolate. Thank goodness that they have an excellent search engine and currency converter. Just in wandering around the site, I have found several items that I would like to try especially as they give a discount for first time customers.

Today I am going to be trying one of their Ceylons. This is a type of black tea that I haven't had a lot of exposure too except in blends. The leaves of this tea are dark brown bordering on black. Rather long and twisted, they give off a light fragrance of honey and brown sugar.

I set them up to brew using 212 degree water and a steep time of 2 minutes. The resulting liquor is golden brown in coloring and doesn't really have much of a fragrance at all.

This tea has a lighter mouth feel and really reminds me of a darjeeling. It's rather smooth without a touch of dryness or astringency to be found when fresh from the pot and just a touch as it cools. With just a hint of tobacco, it is rather naturally sweet with a brown sugar flavor. There is also a general fruity flavor that shows up at the back of the tongue and lingers. All in all, a very nice tea to sip later in the day.

I was rather impressed by this tea especially as I love darjeelings though they can be a tad pricey. The price on this tea is much more reasonable and I definitely want some for my work days.
