traillodgeteamexcocoThis Mexican Cocoa Rooibos is an exclusive herbal tisane by Trail Lodge Tea. Every time this tea is purchased, a portion of the sale is donated to Ninos de Mexico which cares for orphans and encourages the growth of the local churches near Mexico City. I was excited to try this tea because I typically like chocolate teas but I was also worried because I wasn’t sure how spicy it was going to be.

Rooibos, cinnamon, honeybush, cacao bits, chocolate seeds, safflower, chili flakes, and natural flavor are all the ingredients in this tea. The mix of spices in this tea is superb. The cinnamon blends perfectly with the honeyed safflower and the chili flakes. It is also sweet from the honeybush and a tad bitter from the cacao bits, which balances out the spices. When you sniff this tea as it brews, the first thing you smell is chocolate followed by the cinnamon. I brewed 2 teaspoons in 3 cups of water for around 6 minutes. I thoroughly enjoyed my first sip. It is sweet with a little bit of bite as you swallow. For my second sip, I added a bit of sugar. This brought out the chocolate and cinnamon even more. For my third sip I added cream which made this tea like a dessert. If you’re craving hot chocolate but don’t want the calories, this would be a wonderful substitute.

Though it wasn’t my favorite chocolate tea ever, I really enjoyed it. It seems to be one of the best teas for a chilly night when you need something to warm your insides. If you’re a fan of spice, I’m sure you’ll be crazy for this tea. If you prefer sweet over spicy, add some sugar and you’re good to go!
