Happy Earth's first flush Sungma Darjeeling carries a standout airiness resembling a delicate oolong. The majority of first flush Darjeelings are, of course, generally lighter and more floral, but Happy Earth's Sungma is undoubtedly more so than most. The liquor itself shares similar characteristics in its light amber color - a textbook feature of a quality first flush.
The lighter-toned leaves are immediately demonstrative of the tea's delicate nature. Once steeped, they reveal a handsome array of green, auburn, and chestnut. In flavor profile, the darjeeling is similarly diverse with a floral base accompanied by notes of fruit and malt. Possessing an overall complexity with an unmistakable brightness, it finishes off with a bit of the ever-so-classic darjeeling dryness.
Brewing at 190°F for roughly two minutes generated my personal favorite results, though Happy Earth recommends a 3-5 minute infusion under boiled water. A slight bitterness may ensue under such a steeping method, but the liquor is much fuller overall.
Happy Earth's organic grade Sungma manages to reach every mark of a praiseworthy first flush and situates itself as an undoubtedly purchase-worthy item. While some may be indifferent about the tea's lack of bold flavors and sharp fruitiness, the mild darjeeling still has more than enough to offer.
