markwendellfirstflushdarjeelingWhen I recently ordered some teas from Mark T. Wendell Tea Company I was happy to see that they had tossed in some extra samples for me to review. One of these just happened to be their new First Flush offering for 2013. Since I love Darjeeling teas, this choice made me beyond happy.

This year's offering is from the Goomtee Estate located in the Darjeeling's Kurseong South Valley and is from tea bushes planted back in 1899. My sample consists of a mix of lighter spring green and dusky brown leaves with a fair number of golden tips. They give off the distinct grape aroma blended with oak and a hint of vanilla.

I set them up to brew using my standard 195 degree water and a 3 minute steep time. The resulting liquor is a soft golden brown with a wonderful muscatel fragrance.

This tea practically screams freshness from the very first taste. It is a lighter tea with flavors that wash delightfully from one to another starting out with a hint of oakiness blending into a general fruity flavor and finishing up with a lingering floral sweetness.

This tea is everything that I want from a First Flush Darjeeling and is a real treat. At less then $6.00 an ounce complete with an airtight tin, it is also a real steal. And it also doesn't hurt that it is an organic tea grown in a sustainable fashion that bodes well for future years. I just hope that there is still some available when I go to place my next order.

Visit Mark T. Wendell Teas for more information on this tea and many more from their extensive product catalogue.
