brewlalaredvelvetI always love trying new tea flavors and I have been excited to try Brew La La’s Organic Red Velvet tea. I’ve had a chocolate red velvet tea in the past but I haven’t had plain red velvet. I was curious about what was in this tea and what made it taste like red velvet. On Brew La La’s website I discovered that the ingredients are organic rooibos, hibiscus, rose petals, cherry flavour, and vanilla flavour. The tea is imported from Sri Lanka. I found it interesting that they mixed hibiscus and rooibos and I was unsure of how the flavors would mix.

The tea comes in bags so I steeped one tea bag in a mug of water for 5 minutes. Before steeping, I smelled the tea bag and must say I wasn’t impressed. The smell was not pleasant. As I steeped the tea, the smell totally changed. It went from fake and stale to bright and sweet. The water became a red-orange color; not quite as dark as red velvet. The smell reminded me of a fresh vanilla cupcake. I took a sip and was surprised at the sweetness. This tea is very sweet and flowery due to the hibiscus. It is also warm and smooth due to the rooibos and vanilla. It leaves a strong cherry aftertaste in your mouth. I’ve only had one or two pieces of red velvet cake in the past but this tea does indeed taste like red velvet. It exceeded my expectations. After smelling the tea bag, I expected the tea to taste a bit fake. Though the flavor doesn’t taste entirely natural, it is pleasant and somewhat fresh. It isn’t bitter. The floral rose petals and hibiscus are well balanced with the cherry, vanilla, and rooibos. My only complaint would be that it is a tad too sweet and could use less cherry flavoring.

If you are looking for a unique, sweet tea, then this is perfect. You could drink this tea in place of dessert. It doesn’t need anything added as it is creamy and sweet. Since it comes in tea bags it’s very convenient and since it is caffeine-free you can drink it any time of the day. This tea would also be a great gift for a red velvet lover.
