cameronsunmoonlakeCameron Tea specializes in Taiwanese teas so I was very curious to check out an Assam that was grown there. This particular tea was grown at Sun Moon Lake at an altitude of 700 meters. Not quite the norm there.

The leaves are gorgeous. With a really dark evergreen color, the leaves are huge with some being over an inch long. They give off a delicious malt aroma tempered with cocoa. I set them up to brew using boiling water and a steep time of two minutes. The resulting brew has a dark reddish tone to it and a woody, chocolatey aroma.

Now when I drink an assam, I am have become accustomed to a brisk, in your face, flavor that is sometimes best tamed with cream and a sweetener. Not so with this assam. It has a gentler flavor that is best savored without additives. There is a malty twang to it which is smoothed out by dark chocolate, caramel, and roasted nuts. There is a slight astringency that sneaks in at the end of each sip. As the cup cools, the dark chocolate becomes more pronounced.

Oh my. I think that I am in love. If all assams tastes like this tea then I would drink no other. Well not really but you get the idea. This is an incredible tea that I will be going back for time and time again.
