Tea became my drink of choice on Friday the 13, 1979.
It was Good Friday. I was staying with my friend, Julie, whose family was devoutly Catholic.
"We can't eat or drink anything except water and black tea," Julie announced as she retrieved a pot and a box of Lipton from her kitchen cupboards.
I still remember the dark amber swirls the teabags made in the boiling water as she sloshed them around. I was hungry and the smell was divine. With one sip, I was hooked.
For decades, I downed pot after pot after pot of the strongest, darkest teas I could find- Assams, Ceylons and heavy-roasted oolongs. I drank so much I gave myself caffeine poisoining!
These days, I focus on finding lighter teas with complex, unusual flavors.
A serious student of teas and tisanes, I received my certification with the International Tea Master's Association in 2013.
