Teaviews Profile: Kari

Hey, my name is Kari and I love tea! I have been married for the last fifteen years and the only child I have is my cat – Bratty. He is 18 years old and, as my husband likes to say, is the only thing he has left that he brought into the marriage. I grew up in Southern California but have lived all over the country. I currently reside in Charleston, South Carolina where I hope to stay. My passions in life are food, travel, Hootie and the Blowfish and, of course, tea. I work in the mental health field, most recently as a rehabilitation counselor.

I didn’t know that much about tea until a few years ago. My sisters-in-law bought me a nice teapot and some good quality loose tea. Up until then my tea experience was lipton tea bags with too much sugar. My parents still consider that the top of the line in tea, and simply put up with my nagging to “try the tea” and “cut down on the sugar.” The loose tea from my sisters - that was good tea. Now I try as much tea as I can get my hands on. I have my favorites, but what I truly love is trying new teas, in new ways. I also discovered that I could combine my love of tea and my love of food by going to “high teas.” I never pass up a chance to try a new one or to go to an old favorite. I really can’t thank my sisters enough for buying me that first tea.

We recently purchased our first house and, instead of a dining room, we have a tea room. It has a tea cabinet, tea displays and even a 50 slot shadow box for displaying my tea in tins. Even the wallpaper and seat cushions are tea themed. At any given time I have over a hundred different teas that I am trying, hoarding or giving away. I have quite a selection of tea literature and delight in learning all I can about tea. I’m even going to the Northwest Tea Festival in Seattle this fall!

The most enjoyment I get from tea though, is sharing it with others. I love trying to match someone’s taste with the perfect tea, or finding the tea that will finally “convert” someone to real tea. That is a worthy accomplishment!
