Teaviews Profile: Troy

Hello, I'm Troy. I'm originally from southern California, but I currently live In Watsonville, In Santa Cruz County. I officially I moved up here for work, unofficially I love being close to so many vineyards. In many ways my new found appreciation, and dare I say love, for Teas and Tisanes, stems from the extended pallet I've developed from drinking wine. Many of the concepts of wine tasting carry over to Tea. In order to really taste a good Tea you still have to break the flavour down into its constituent parts, and you still have to smell the bouquet. Tea does have a few things over wine, you don't have to swirl to bring out the scent, its fun to watch tea leaves open up, and you don't have to sniff for cork rot.

As my mothers family came from the south, and the Midwest, I was raised on a steady diet of Iced tea. My grandfather was practically addicted to Lipton's Instant Iced Tea, and to this day I can't picture the man without picturing a canister of the black powder. However I've stayed with primarily instant, and bagged, Teas at home until very recently. I have to say that Adagio's relatively inexpensive sample packs finally pushed me over the edge. Like most who consume tea from a bag, I always assumed that loose leaf teas were expensive, and not worth the extra money, I was wrong. It was a cup of Hojicha that changed my drinking habits forever. It had a rich, roasted, vegital flavour that I had just never tasted before. That flavour did not exist in my world until then. While I still occasionally dunk a bag in my cup, it becomes rarer by the day. Moreover, Soda is practically gone from my home. Very little, in the world of non-alcoholic beverages, compares to fresh steeped, real, Tea.

I'll try just about anything once, I'm fortunate in that I don't have any herbal allergies, lets just hope they never make a Tisane with bell peppers. I'm developing a strong taste for Japanese Green teas, and for Rooibos.
