Apples are one of the most widely-cultivated tree fruits, and are actually a member of the rose family (Rosaceae). The wild ancestor of the domesticated apple tree (Malus sieversii) originated in what is now Kazakhstan, and can still be found growing in the mountains of Central Asia. Research suggests that apples may help to reduce the risk of certain types of cancer and heart disease, they lower cholesterol and help maintain a healthy weight. Apples are also high in antioxidants.
