Black Currant Tea

The Black Currant (also known as Cassis) is a species of Ribes berry, native to central and northern Europe, as well as northern Asia. They have a sweet and sharp taste and are popularly used in British cuisine for jams, jellies, juices and desserts. Although once popular and widely available in the United States, American farmers were largely banned from growing them throughout the 20th century because the berry was thought to have spread diseases amongst white pine which threatened the lumber industry. Most of these bans have been lifted in recent years, however, and black currant farming is making a slow comeback in the United States.
