harney-sons-sencha.jpgThe tea that I drink every morning without fail is Harney and Sons Sencha, a fragrant, loose-leaf Japanese green. The reason I keep buying it is that it is a great value for an authentic, quality sencha. The color and aroma are both excellent, being much more fragrant than the average American green tea, yet not at all bitter. As compared to say, Twinings' Gunpowder Green, which is fairly dark, not very fragrant and which tastes more like a weak black or oolong, this green produces a beautiful golden color with a hint of green and that unique Japanese green tea flavor, which I might liken to melon. It's smooth and mild, yet distinctive and with lingering flavor.

Generally speaking, I can recommend Harney and Sons as much or more than any other American tea brand I've tried. Their quality and value is excellent. I buy the above-mentioned quality sencha for only $40 a pound, for example, significantly less than you'd pay if you were to buy a Japanese brand sencha like Itouen at the grocery or online. Really, the only better green I've ever tasted has been at smaller shops in Japan. For sencha in America, this brand is top-notch. I've also tried their Oolongs and a few flavored blacks and herbals. Though I've been disappointed in a couple of orders, such as the lavender tea, I think this has more to do with me not liking lavender tea than it not being high-quality. Their selection of Oolongs is especially good, and I've tried some excellent, fragrand Tie Guanyins from them as well.
