Thumbs up!"An excellent matcha, though the ginger flavor could have been a bit more pronounced. Still I really enjoyed this blend."

artoftea-ginger-matcha.jpgArt of Tea's Ginger Matcha was my first experience with matcha, so my review may be incomplete in that I cannot compare it to other matchas. The aroma of this tea is very "green", and bears just the slightest hint of ginger, vaguely reminiscent of the sweet, chewy ginger candies found in health food stores. Preparing the matcha was a new experience for me, so I was very careful to make sure I had the appropriate matcha to water ratio. The end result was an opaque, dark green brew. I must admit that after smelling the powder and observing the thick brew that I prepared, I had second thoughts about actually going through with the sampling. Braced for the worst, I ended up being pleasantly surprised. The tea was quite refreshing and the earthy green tea flavor was much, much lighter than I had anticipated. The flavor is unique and hard to describe, but definitely should not be compared to the taste of standard green tea. Try as I might, I had difficulty tasting any ginger flavor, though. There is a chalky essence to this tea (probably from not whisking it enough) that actually gives the tea a nice mouth-feel. I read previously that when preparing to drink matcha, one should have a small sweet before drinking this tea. I happened to have some chocolate on hand, and had a small nibble before sampling the tea. I must say that the sweetness of the chocolate really brought out the best in the matcha.

In all, my experience with Art of Tea's Ginger Matcha was a positive one. I would definitely say that I prefer this matcha to any standard green tea I have tried. My main criticism (and cause for a rating of 7 out of 10) is that the ginger flavor was barely detectable. I would definitely drink this matcha again (and in fact I am about to make myself a second cup), though I am not sure I would purchase this particular brand, since the ginger was too subtle.
