mightyleaf-organic-earl-gre.jpgSince I'm more a connoisseur of greens and oolongs, I have an unfortunate bias towards thinking "once you've tasted one Earl Grey, you've tasted them all"--that is, while there are obviously significant differences in quality, they usually tend to have very similar tastes and fragrance. I was pleasantly surprised to find this one a notch above your average Earl Grey.

The leaves are a mixture of various shades of dark brown (as compared to many Earl Greys which are virtually black) and have a nice, smokey, almost Pu'er-like fragrance to them in addition to the usual citrusy bergamot smell. The bergamot fragrance is also nice in that it smells strong, but not artificial, perfumey or over-powering. The leaves are surprisingly big for a black and you can see a lot more whole leaves than with most Earl Greys, which tend to unfurl into little shreds. The brew they produce is also a very nice color--much redder and warmer than most blacks. This tea makes you see why the Chinese and Japanese call black tea "red tea." The fragrance of the brew is also pleasant but not overpowering and the flavor is very good. You get just enough of the typical bergamot smell without it completely overpowering the actual tea flavor. It is also not bitter and while it has a little astringent bite, it doesn't fall prey to that issue to the degree many Earl Greys seem to. Because Ian McKellen in The DaVinci Code told me to put lemon and no milk or sugar in my Earl Grey, I begrudgingly gave this addition a try and was pleasantly surprised. I probably still prefer it with nothing added, but I can see how one might enjoy it with a squeeze of lemon, which kind of fills out the flavor and gives you that stereotypical "English tea time" kind of feel.

I can definitely recommend this to fans of Earl Grey and scented blacks. It really makes you see that there is a difference you can see, smell and taste.

The taste is amazing. Just add a bit of honey and little lemon. The smell is so refreshing.. I would bathe in it.
