Its OK"A unique mixture of black tea, lavender, lemon peel, lemongrass and "Bavarian cream" flavor... a little bitter, but a dollop of sugar helps to round out the flavors."

necessiteas-black-lavender.jpgThe name "Black Lavender" here may be misleading, as this blend is much more than just a simple black tea mixed with lavender. Lemon peel, lemongrass and a touch of "Bavarian cream" flavor are thrown into the mix as well, in what is indeed a unique-tasting tea. Opening the bag and taking that obligatory "first whiff" was truly wonderful - a mixture of sweet flowery lavender mixed with tangy notes of citrus and cream. It is perhaps the finest aroma of any tea I've yet come across.

But once again, teas are for tasting, not for smelling. And unfortunately, the wonderfully exotic and complex aromas I detected in the raw leaves didn't completely translate into the taste of the final brew. Its still a very fine tea, and I enjoyed it quite a bit, but the flavor and the raw aroma of the leaves are markedly different from each other. The actual brew is a bold and intense, and slightly bitter, black tea. (A bit of sugar helps to round out that bitterness). The primary flavor I detected, interestingly enough, was licorice - which of course, isn't actually in the brew. But somehow the mixture of creamy/tangy/flowery ingredients ended up tasting like a very subtle licorice.

I'll admit that I didn't much care for the first few sips of this tea, and was indeed ready to give it a fairly mediocre review, but as I continued to drink it I came to appreciate the flavors a bit more. I think its just such a radical departure from the aroma of the raw leaves that I couldn't help but be disappointed at first. Once I got beyond that initial disappointment, though, it turned out to be a rather enjoyable tea. Its unlikely I would actually order it again for myself, but the unique mixture of flavors is certainly unlike any tea I've ever tried before (and by now, I've had quite a few!)... I'm sure there are tea-lovers out there who would very much enjoy this one.
