mightyleafvanillabean.jpgMighty Leaf's Vanilla Bean black tea is probably the lowest ranking Mighty Leaf product I have sampled to date. Whereas most of their other products have been decent or better, this one was a true disappointment. To start out, this tea completely lacked vanilla flavor. The vaguest hint of vanilla is present in the aroma of the dry leaves, but when brewed, this little hint of flavor disappears. Making matters worse is the fact that the black tea used as the base was nearly undrinkable to me. Mighty Leaf's website says that the tea leaves are a blend of China and Ceylon teas, which seems to be the standard for their flavored teas. Whereas I have never noticed a particularly undrinkable element to this tea base before, for some reason it was particularly off-putting today. After steeping for only three minutes, the tea was smoky , heavy, and bitter in flavor, without the faintest trace of a sweet vanilla element. I added milk and sugar to make the tea a bit smoother, and hopefully coax out any vanilla flavor hiding out in the leaves...no luck. I ended up having to add A LOT more milk and sugar to even make the tea palatable, but still there was no sign of vanilla and the tea still never approached anything praiseworthy. This is definitely not something I would recommend. There are far better vanilla teas out there, and I am still puzzled how a relatively simple flavored tea could go so wrong.
