As soon as I opened my sample packet of TeaGuys Sweet Pumpkin Spice, I commented to myself that the TeaGuys really know how to capture dessert flavors in tea form. This tea is just brimming with pumpkin pie spices, namely mace, ginger, and cinnamon. Sweet Pumpkin Spice is an herbal tea blend of organic honeybush, organic rooibos, and buckwheat, making it a perfect dessert tea because it can be enjoyed in the later hours without inducing a caffeine buzz. True to my past experiences with TeaGuys blends, this tea contains many other ingredients as well: candied peanuts, pumpkin pieces, pumpkin seeds, stevia leaf, and natural flavors. In all, this brews up to quite the spicy cup of tea. In fact, there is an almost harsh element that burned my throat a little bit. This harshness is neutralized, however, by the addition of milk or cream. While the spicy flavors come through and are most definitely reminiscent of pumpkin pie flavors, I found a notable absence of actual pumpkin flavor here, despite the addition of pumpkin pieces and pumpkin seeds to the mix. I wish the pumpkin came through more (or at all), as I bet that would have naturally reduced the harshness from the spices, added a creamy element to the tea, and made this blend a truly decadent dessert tea. As I sipped this tea, I realized that the flavors in this blend are actually quite similar to another TeaGuys blend called Carrot Cake, which reigns supreme as my all-time favorite rooibos blend. While some of the spice flavors are similar between these two teas, there is something in the Sweet Pumpkin Spice (perhaps the mace?) that makes this tea just a little too harsh. Overall, I enjoyed this blend, but would recommend adding some milk or sugar to tone down the spice level of this tea. If you are looking for something with a spicy kick but far different from traditional chai spices, give this one a shot. If, however, you are searching for authentic pumpkin flavor instead of pupkin pie spice flavor, I suggest you pass this one by.
