teapigs-lemongrass.jpgThere's really not much to say about straight lemongrass. It's usually the additive to an herbal blend, providing a citrusy layer to what might otherwise be bland. In addition to that - as most kitchen-lackeys know - it's used in Asian cuisine. One would rarely use it by itself.

I tried my first cup of loose leaf lemongrass tea roughly three years ago. It was gentle, vaguely lemony (hence the namesake), and mildly sour. It didn't make enough of an impression for me to seek out more, but I did make lemongrass a regular purchase for my own personal blends. I found that it counteracted the astringency of green yerba mate or the pungency of ginger.

Teapigs not only presents a solo lemongrass tea, but also in a bagged form; a fishnet/mesh thingy anyway. Unlike other bagged teas, the leafy bits aren't ground down into sawdust for quick steeps. The grass reeds are whole and freshly cut. Scent-wise, well, it's lemongrass. Not much more to say there.

I was at work when I had this, as is customary with my only use of bagged teas. In other words, it wasn't given a typical rite of passage via steeping cup, tea kettle, timer or temp. I simply filled a mug with hot water and dropped the bag in. Faux-citrus flavor and smell were instantaneous. Taste-wise, it is as one would expect, difficult to screw up.

In short, I liked it. Yet I believe as I did before that lemongrass is a better compliment than a base. Further tea bags have been used in conjunction with other blends to give them flavor, especially the dry-mouth feeling left by some detox teas. It is worthy of note, but I can't really say it hold it's own. More like a terrific topping.
