Not Great"Overall, this is a good tea, and I appreciate its mellow flavour, but it doesn't measure up to what it could have been as a loose tea that allowed the oolong taste to shine through more."

kalahariacitronoolongblue.jpgEver since I've moved into the realm of loose leaf tea, I've slowly turned into more of a tea snob and started to really dislike grocery store-type bagged teas. They've begun to taste cheap, and the fact that they cost just as much as quality loose teas is a huge downside. There are exceptions, but they are few and far between.

That being said, this tea was better than I expected yet a disappointment at the same time. As far as bagged teas go, this isn't bad. However, it wouldn't really be fair of me to rate this in a different category than all the loose teas I've been hard on, so I am going to judge it by the same standards.

The unsteeped bag smells pretty terrible, enough that I wasn't looking forward to drinking the tea. Once it was steeped, the tea itself still didn't appeal to the 'ol olfactory system, but fortunately I find the scent far worse than the overall flavour of the tea.

The bergamot taste is smooth and provides the drinker with an interesting and lighter take on the Earl Grey favourite. Unfortunately, the flavour of the oolong is entirely lost beneath the bergamot.

Overall, this is a good tea, and I appreciate its mellow flavour, but it doesn't measure up to what it could have been as a loose tea that allowed the oolong taste to shine through more.

Sorry, but when you rate a tea 4.5/10, it is no longer in the realm of “good”. It is along the lines of mexican tap water.

  2. Stephen Says:

Actually, a 4.5 on our rating scale means it was essentially just below average. Something “along the lines of mexican tap water” would be in the 1/10 or 2/10 range. 🙂

That said, it is probably worth the effort to post an explanation of our internal rating scale somewhere publicly on the site. I can see your point that a 4.5/10 would appear to be an “F” if seen in one way, and just below “average” if viewed another.

I would rate Mexican Tap water a 6, sure it tastes terrible, but the hallucinations can’t be beat!

  4. Geoff Says:

I also hear that the worms one can get from Mexican tapwater are the evolved, “Futurama” kind. I could use those.
