blackmerlot.jpgWhen I think of Merlot wine, several strong words come to mind: Bold, heavy, rich, bitter. I remember trying some Merlot in my youth and hating it because it was too complex for my limited palate. I have since changed my stance on merlot, and now I absolutely love it, so I jumped at the chance to sample a tea that boasted its flavour as reminiscent of "fine Merlot wine."

I'll be the first to admit I'm a sucker for well-named teas. Two teas can have the same ingredients, but if one has an enticing name, I am far more likely to read the desciption and thus be cajoled into ordering it. This tea is the empitome of using an intruiguing name to get it sold, but it just doesn't live up to the title.

This isn't a bad tea, but no aspect of it stands out as particularly appealing. It smells similar to blackberries and has a shallow, slighty tart fruity flavour. Nothing about it reminds me of Merlot wine save for the fruity flavour, but if you count that, then I've tried dozens of teas that could be called Merlot-flavoured.

I would have been far less disappointed if they had just called this a fruit medly tea and described it as such. Of course, then I probably wouldn't have tried it, so Merkaba provided great advertising but not great tea.
