The only time I've tasted vanilla as an additive for rooibos (or it's cousin, honeybush) was with a bagged tea. It was was the epitome of creaminess, the apex of smooth. Not a middle-of-the-day tea by any stretch, but still quite dandy. I don't know what it is, but those African herbs and vanilla go hand in hand like a cross-cultural marriage.

The Teacup Co. decided to try and snazz things up a bit by adding hazelnut, chamomile and lavender. Why would they ruin so perfect a combo with lavender? I know not. The chamomile, I could accept, however.

Dry, the stuff looked and smelled like ground pecan pie. Obviously, the feeling they're trying to invoke is an evening dessert, to which I say, "Good call." The liquor was a deep red, tasted like hazelnut ice cream extract. I was overjoyed that lavender only made a scant appearance in the finish. Chamomile was nigh on undetectable.

As an added treat, I happened to be at work while trying this. Since the brew almost had the consistency of a light coffee, I decided to raid the stash. On the second infusion, I added hazelnut creamer. It complimented perfectly. Probably considered sacriligious in some circles, though.
